Movement - Our Mother Tongue

Learn the ancient language of dance

Who can forget the feel-good energy of classic dance movies like Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Saturday Night Fever or Strictly Ballroom? Who hasn't yet seen one of the many current films or reality TV shows and competitions dedicated to the artistry of dance?

One of the most beautiful sights is that of the human body in total harmony with soul and spirit – perfect control, effortless grace. As such, dancing has been capturing people's imaginations since time immemorial.

It remains at the basic level of human expression – communicating ideas, stories, emotions, and moods. Research affirms that the power of non-verbal communication is often more compelling than verbal communication and history reveals that before the written language, dance was used to pass stories and myths down from one generation to the next.

Dancing is something everyone can enjoy
because everyone understands it instinctively and can access it freely.

Energy and Inspiration

The Fred Astaire Dance Studio tradition began in 1947 when one of the greatest dancers of all time, Mr. Fred Astaire developed a practical dance curriculum that embodied the fundamental principles of good dancing flavoured by style and grace. Since he opened the first dance studio on New York City's Park Avenue the company has expanded internationally and today offers various dance classes like Latin and Ballroom dancing as well as Salsa and Argentinian Tango.

Fred Astaire Kyalami dance studio is situated in the tranquil Blue Hills countryside, just 4km from the hub of Kyalami, Gauteng. The access-controlled venue allows you to relax in a safe environment where you can turn every dance lesson into a mini-breakaway. Fred Astaire Kyalami also makes use of its charming garden setting for outdoor dancing during the balmy South African summer evenings – a magical experience with romantic views of the city lights in the distance.

Never think you are too old or too inexperienced to join our Kyalami dance studio. The world's oldest performing ballet dancer is 90 years old – and he took up ballet when he was 79. Never danced before and feeling a bit nervous? We offer all kinds of dance instruction for all ages, and for all levels. You can even choose from private lessons, group classes or practice lessons. Why not try the Waltz, Swing, Rumba, Cha-cha, Boogie, Foxtrot or Merengue? We offer it all!

More than a pastime

Much more than steps to music, dancing provides an individual with a whole new lifestyle. The act of dancing alone simultaneously involves kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional processes. It is the integration of body and mind and a wonderful amalgamation of several different art-forms.

Then there are the multitude of benefits. A 21-year long study of senior citizens, 75 and older, was led by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and the findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study monitored rates of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, and questioned whether any physical or cognitive recreational activities (like crossword puzzles, reading, etc) influenced mental sharpness.

The results? The only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. Reading reduced the risk of dementia by 35%; bicycling and swimming – 0%; playing golf – 0%; frequent dancing – 76% – the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical.

Rhythm is a natural force that is hard-wired into our genes – all you have to do is learn how to access it.

Let the qualified instructors at Fred Astaire Kayalami show you how.
